East London is the second largest city in the Eastern Cape and is the main centre of the Buffalo City Municipality. It is situated on the far-eastern Cape coast at the mouth of the Baffalo River. East London is South Africa's only river port and the sixth largest city in South Africa. East London was named Port Rex, when it came under British control in 1846, but renamed in 1848 when the area was annexed to the Cape Colony. In 1873 East London was given town rights. The area's sandy beaches, river mouths, safe swimming and mild climate attract many summer visitors.
