Bethlehem, surrounded by the magnificent scenery, was founded in 1864 on the farm Pretoriuskloof. The town is situated on the N5 route between Bloemfontein and Durban, and is the principal town of the Eastern Free State. Its biblical name means 'house of bread' which is most appropriate as it forms the centre of a fertile wheat-growing region, producing 65% of the country's total wheat crop.
