The high mountains of the Eastern Free State form a sharp contrast with the plains in the rest of the province. The well-preserved examples of San rock-art found in these mountainous areas are a clear indication that not only the modern cultures stand frozen to its beauty. The area between the Caledon and the Orange River once was the haven of the nomadic San. The arrival of the Basotho's, and later the Voortrekkers, led to endless quarrels over land ownership. This could however, not stop Jan de Winnaar's enthusiasm to establish the farm Verliesfontein. The town that eventually developed was named after De Winnaar's wife, Johanna Zastron. At present the town has a vibrant, dynamic community, with a diversity of cultures that will do anything for the prosperity of their town.
